Colleen Lachowitz, the Democratic state senate candidate in Maine whose race drew national attention when the state’s Republican party attacked her for her world of warcraft persona, won election on Tuesday, ousting Republican incumbent Tom H. Martin Jr. by a little over 900 votes, according to the Morning Sentinel. Lachowitz drew criticism from the Maine state GOP for comments the candidate made online while playing World of Warcraft (Lachowicz is a level 85 orc in the popular multi-player online role-playing game. ) Only, it wasn’t Lachowicz herself who made the comments–it was Lachowicz’s warcraft alter-ego, Santiaga. Santiaga said some not-so-nice things about Republicans, including conservative tax icon and promoter of the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” Grover Norquist. Santiaga commented that she “may have to go and hunt down Grover Norquist and drown him in my bath tub.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black aviators in the U.S. military. During World War II they were trained as a segregated unit in central Alabama at Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University. Carter was in the first group that trained for the 99th Fighter Squadron. They were prohibited from fighting alongside white counterparts and faced severe prejudice, yet became one of World War II's most respected fighter squadrons. Carter flew 77 missions and crashed landed only once. Tuskegee's mayor ordered flags in the town flown at half-staff. Funeral arrangements are pending.

From suburb to basket case: How California city traveled the road to ruin

The mayor criticized a dysfunctional city council and greedy police and fire unions. The unions criticized the mayor. Even now, there is little contract on exactly how the city entered this crisis or exactly how it can extricate itself. "It's total political chaos," said John Husing, a previous San Bernardino resident and regional economist. "There is no solution. They'll never fix anything.". Yet on close examination, the city's decades-long trip from prosperous, middle-class area to bankrupt, crime-ridden, foreclosure-blighted basket case is straightforward -- and alarmingly similar to the path traveled by many municipalities around America's biggest state. San Bernardino succumbed to a vicious circle of self-interests among city employees, regional politicians and state pension overseers.
