Former New Hampshire Sen. Warren Rudman dies at 82

Former Sen. Warren B. Rudman, who co-authored a ground-breaking budget balancing law, championed ethics and led a commission that predicted the danger of homeland terrorist attacks before 9/11, has died. He was 82. He died Monday night, according to his Washington, D.C., firm, the Albright Stonebridge Group. The feisty New Hampshire Republican went to the Senate in 1981 with a reputation as a tough prosecutor, and was called on by Senate leaders, and later by presidents of both parties, to tackle tough assignments. He is perhaps most well-known from his Senate years as co-sponsor of the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings budget-cutting law. He left the Senate in 1993, frustrated that the law never reached its potential because Congress, President Ronald Reagan and the President George H.W. Bush played politics instead of insisting on spending cuts.

Angus King, the newly elected independent senator from Maine, announced today that he will caucus with the Democrats in the Senate, a decision he said he made after considerations about how best to protect his independence and how best to serve his constituents. King, a former Maine governor, said he contemplated eschewing formal affiliation with either party but ultimately decided it would leave him "relegated to the sidelines" except for in extraordinary circumstances of deadlock. "I established two basic criteria -- that I wanted to maintain my independence as long and as thoroughly as possible while at the same time being effective in my representation of Maine," King told reporters, of his decision-making process.

WI: Obama 49%, Romney 46%... With Obama back the trail (in WI, NV, CO) he begins making his final  argument… Romney (who is in VA today) restarted his closing argument yesterday… And will this be another year of the Senate women?  By Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Domenico Montanaro, and Brooke Brower*** Will Obama’s firewall hold? The 2012 presidential election could very well hinge on this question: Will President Obama’s Midwest firewall -- Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin -- hold up? The Romney campaign believes it won’t. “Right now, their firewall is burning,” Romney Political Director Rich Beeson said on a conference call yesterday (though that observation isn’t yet backed up by the public polls).

Wisconsin's Baldwin becomes first openly gay senator | Redux

Wisconsin's Baldwin becomes first openly gay senator

Excerpt:

Thompson, who served as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the administration of George W. Bush, retired from politics in his concession speech. “I'm not going to run again,” Thompson, 70, who survived a divisive ideological primary,  told supporters on Tuesday. “But I certainly am going to be supporting people to do the right things for the right reasons to build Wisconsin and build America. ”The Senate race was the most expensive in state history with the two candidates raising at least $65 million, Reuters reported. Baldwin will take the seat of Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl, who is retiring after his fourth term. Baldwin, 50, is a former Wisconsin assemblywoman who was first elected to Congress in 1998. With her projected victory, she also becomes the first female senator from Wisconsin. Baldwin joined protesters at the state capital in Madison who objected to Gov.
