The United States and other Western powers could be trying to find a "pretext for intervention" in Syria's civil war, a member of the Assad regime said Thursday, after U.S. officials told NBC News that the country's military was prepared to use chemical weapons against its own people. The Syrian military has loaded the precursor chemicals for sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into aerial bombs that could be dropped from dozens of fighter-bombers, the unnamed American officials said. Sarin is an extraordinarily lethal agent. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's forces killed 5,000 Kurds with a single sarin attack on Halabja in 1988.
