Sudan Rebels Claim to Have Downed Warplane

Sudanese rebels stated Thursday that they ambushed a military patrol, eliminating 10 soldiers, and shot down a government warplane after its bombs killed 2 civilians in an embattled southern region. The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North stated in a declaration that the Antonov bomber was downed Wednesday by rebels in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan state. The rebels additionally claimed in a different statement that they ambushed a Sudanese military patrol Wednesday in South Kordofan on a major road connecting the towns of Angarko and Hajar-Jawad, eliminating 10 soldiers. The rebels stated they damaged four federal government autos and captured tools from soldiers in the ambush. One rebel fighter was killed. The claims could not be separately validated. Sudanese officials were not readily available for comment.
